Having recently been made aware of a project claiming to be a rebirth of my Owl Project I have been encouraged to issue a statement. I will therefore state the following:
The recently posted video purporting to be of the Owl Project is not mine. There are many differences both large and small, but it is not my code, it is just something made to look like it.
I have never given any consent , nor will I give any consent to the use of any names, story, characters, graphics, textures, images, models, code, gameplay or any other associated Intellectual Property from the Owl Project to be used by anybody else. Indeed, nobody has ever approached me to obtain my consent.
The Owl Project was never abandoned or canned. Whilst several admittedly long breaks have been taken due to health concerns, the project was never abandoned. I will also state that only a small proportion of the game and its capabilities has ever been demonstrated.
I separated myself from the community many years ago and I have no plans to return, or to answer any questions about the project. I will continue at whatever pace I enjoy and announce things when/if I feel appropriate.
Whilst imitation might indeed be the sincerest form of flattery, any projects claiming to be the Owl Project, or imitating it, are/have been made expressly without my consent.

I'm Mrs. Atari Owl and co-creator of the Owl Project. I agree with everything in this statement.
ReplyDeleteHello. I'm the creator of the "fake" owl project. For the little story, I wanted to contact you but noticed your haven't been active on AA in more than 10 years, and your blog seemed completely abandoned. In any case, don't see anything more in that project than a little hommage combined with a little prank at the expense of the jag community. At the end of the day, this is not the same technology, and the real game will be quite different, but that was an interesting challenge to see if I could match somehow what you showed so many years ago.
ReplyDeleteHello Lord Kraken,
ReplyDelete(Regret the delay dealing with this, more family health issues)
The situation is unfortunate.
The great pity is that you made no effort at all to contact me.
I have been in contact with several people in just the last couple of years or so. People who reached out to me (or indeed, I even reached out to some) even through AA messages.
Each has found me to be amiable, reasonable and helpful, though also justifiably wary. I will not name them as I have no desire to drag them unwillingly into the situation. It is their choice if they speak up.
I also have several known friends/collaborators both active and semi-active in the community. Simply asking them would have led to messages being passed on.
Another pity is that if we had talked I might well have been receptive to helping, yes even with another 3D adventure/rpg, though perhaps only in technical aspects as I would not have wanted to overlap with anybody else's project any more than I would want overlap with my own.
