Well sometimes things just don't work out as one would hope - and when coding alone without a specific deadline one runs the risk of running up blind alleys - and I'm sorry to say over the last two months that's precisely what I did.
I put a lot of effort into the engine revision mentioned in the previous post - we hoped it would achieve about 10% (or more) improvement in polygon throughput.
After weeks of agony with unexplained crashes it ran earlier today and it's actually slower than when I began the experiment by 5% - so I guess we'll have to go back to the engine as it stood in November.
